One of the first things you should do as an affiliate marketer is to build you own website. Yes, you can market affiliate programs without it by adding links to your email or signature file on message boards, but you will be very limited in how much you can earn this way. Building a website allows you to expose the products you are promoting to a much larger audience with less effort.

Decide on a Topic

Your first step is to decide what you would like your website to be about. Find a topic you like, something you are passionate about. You will be spending a lot of time creating content for your site, so it may as well be something you enjoy reading and writing about. Your enthusiasm for the subject will shine through as well, and will get your visitors interested. Once you have your topic, make sure there are affiliate products available that compliment the site and that there are people interested in buying it.

Pick a Domain Name

The other night I had dinner with a friend who mentioned knowing quite a few people needing websites for their local businesses. Despite being a software engineer, my friend is not a web designer nor does he know enough about servers to actually host (store) websites. On the other hand, he suspected there was a way to translate contacts into some money on the side. That's when I told him about reselling.

Reselling is basically the business of selling web space that is already established by a web space provider (known as a host). A host sells you their space and, in turn, you sell it to your client. This arrangement is like buying at wholesale and selling at retail prices. It's also like subletting an apartment for more than your own rent. In terms of websites, the ideal reseller scenario is one where you buy web space at a low enough rate so you can sell it to your client at your own price and make a profit.

More specifically, if you purchase a web hosting plan for $5 per month and sell it to your client for $15 per month, you are making a 200% profit instantly each month. Who wouldn't like spending $5 in order to make $10 profit? Ten such arrangements bring in around $100 per month or $1,200 per year. Sounds like easy money on the side.

But what exactly is required of a reseller? This article isn't meant to provide quick ways to simply make money off your friends and business contacts. It's a legitimate way to provide them with something they need for a fair price. While you need to have a basic knowledge of what a host does, you won't have all of the answers, not a first. This is where the experience and professionalism of your host comes into play. For instance, if your client has questions about setting up an email account, you need to respond in a timely manner with the answer. If you don't know the answer to a support issue raised by a client, this is where you host can assist you.

I have seen the roles of resellers vary depending on the host. One host may have direct contact with your clients and answer all their questions. This could be dangerous for you (the reseller) as one day your clients may wind up a direct client of the host and leave you out of the arrangement completely. More commonly, the web host has no dealings with your clients at all. The host bills and supports you (the reseller) and, in turn, you bill and support your clients. If your clients have a problem you can either handle it directly with them or, if you're not sure of the solution, you can ask the host who will take care of it for you. Once you have been reselling for a while you will likely notice two things. First, you will find that clients ask the most questions early on. Once your clients have been setup and their site is running smoothly, you probably won't hear from them much. Secondly, after you field some of the more common support questions from clients and see how your host handles them, you will soon be resolving many issues on your own.

Now that we have established what is involved in becoming a reseller and the importance of good customer support, let's talk about how to widen the profit margin. At the beginning of this article I mentioned my friend was not a web designer, but what if he was?

What if you are a web designer looking to earn more money? Why build a website and then hand it over to someone else to host when you could be offering that service to your clients? Becoming a hosting reseller would be the perfect match for you. The more services you can provide your clients, the more money you will make. Earlier I mentioned that with only 10 reseller accounts you could be earning $100 per month. Imagine if you added fees for web design. The cost for web design is often a one-time fee, but if your client requires monthly updates to their site you could be adding $50 to $100 per month to your monthly profit. Add a few of these type arrangements and you could be earning $500 per month or more.

If you have access to people interested in starting websites they can quickly become a paying client. Web hosts are there to handle everything you don't know how to do; including the management of servers, ensuring your client's data is not only backed up, but protected from natural disasters and hackers. Just because you don't have a degree in server management doesn't mean you can't get into the web business.

Many hosting companies offer reseller packages and most are unique arrangements so shop around and find out which works best for you. Reselling can be very rewarding in that you are genuinely helping others get a website and also you can quickly start earning some money on the side. The trick is to partner up with a host you can trust, one that provides you with the same quality of service and professionalism you want/need to show your own clients.

When you have been involved in affiliate marketing for a year or more you tend to accumulate memberships in a diverse range of Internet programs that are often disconnected.

You will have memberships in a number of income opportunities, downline building programs, traffic exchanges, and payment systems. In addition, you will have one or more domains and web hosting services and access to autoresponders (free and paid). You might also be lucky enough to have a storehouse of e-books and articles that you can draw on.

The problem with this accumulation of diverse programs is that it can cause you to become unfocused and can dissipate or drain your energy.

There are parallels in the corporate world of the 1970's when companies decided to diversify through random acquisitions. By the 1980's, many companies were drained by these acquisitions and had to off-load them. The catch-cry was "get back to your core business". There was a strong move to "integration" of processes, products and services to lift revenue and profit.

In affiliate marketing, you too can explode your affiliate revenue by identifying your core business and integrating other programs around this focus. This will require some hard decisions but it will be worthwhile in the end.

This is what could be a lot better. You could be the one getting what you just gave away, to market other products in the future or even now. What is it? It's the name and email address of the person. That's right, the information that you just gave away, is the most valuable thing you could have and you probably don't know it.

That name and email address is worth everything to you. This is why. You could use it to send your promotional mailings to that person about anything you offer. If you don't have it, you have no way to contact that person. However, the owner of the program you're promoting does. You can bet that they will use it to send their offers out to people on the nice shinny list that you just helped them build. They are thanking you and, at the same time, laughing at you hysterically.

This is just one way solve the problem. Build a landing page that offers the program or service with your own opt-in box. If you don't know how, learn how, because you're loosing a fortune. Then you just take the affiliate link and place it in the section of the code that would go to your thank you page. So, after the visitor signs up to be on YOUR list, you are automatically sending that person to your affiliate page. Then you are getting the best of both worlds.

Can you think of one good reason to give your list of potential customers and profits away? Internet marketing gurus have big enough lists. Makes sure that you are building yours first. You wouldn't leave $1,000,000 on a table in a city bar. At least I hope you wouldn't!

Number 3 Create a mini review

It would be best if you buy that product and review it yourself so you would know you are promoting and would give better reviews. There are several ways to determine whether an affiliate program is worthy. Oftentimes it looks like the Affiliate Manager has all the power, but this is a partnership. There really are thousands of programs available. Don't sign up and promote just any of them. If you aren't completely thrilled about the program, look 5 more minutes and you'll find something better.

Here are some questions to ask yourself whenever you find an affiliate program you're interested in.

Are the products something you believe in? The products better be good. If you're not 100% sold on the products to the point that you'd tell your best friend to buy them then you've got no business signing up for that affiliate program. Keep looking for something better.

Is their website professional?

Your reputation is on the line every time you promote a product or service. If you're sending your traffic to a website that is on free hosting or just looks unprofessional, then you're going to lose the confidence of your subscribers. Now, many sales letters aren't 'pretty' but they are grammatically correct, and everything is functional, with pictures and testimonials. So, although the website doesn't have to be beautiful, it does need to look 'live'.

Is their website easy to navigate?

If shoppers can't figure out how to purchase, then there's no point in sending your traffic there.

What are the numbers?

If you have two programs you like equally well, you can choose between them or write reviews for each and compare and contrast their benefits. Or, if that doesn't fit into your site, then test both to see which gives you the best results.

Free trial?

Any product that offers samples or service that offers a free trial deserves a look. If you can offer your website visitors a sample of any sort to get them hooked, you'll have much higher results than trying to convince them that the product is good.

Are there any tools to help you?

The best affiliate programs go above and beyond in their tools and resources section. Not only do they provide the standard text links and buttons and banners, but you also have solo mailings, articles, and even product feeds. These are the affiliate programs that 'get it'.

Once you find an affiliate program that you love, it's still smart to continue to test the results. Just because you think it's great doesn't mean you visitors will. Continually look at the statistics to see how much traffic you're sending and if any of it is converting. Thinking about starting your affiliate business? There are three phases that you go through.

1. Pick an affiliate.

You must find out which specific audience you'd like to target. Most people go with whatever program with the first one they check out. They never consider if their target market will purchase this product. As long as people will pay for it and you can give them a quality product, you will be able to make a lot of money.

Choosing the right affiliate program to start with is very important. Brand yourself as resourceful by having quality products that have lots of value. You need to know what commission rate they plan on paying you and the program's refund policy. You need to know when you get paid. Most take 30 to 45 days to mail you a check based on your previous month. Many affiliate programs cost nothing to join. However, some do require a start-up fee. It should be a discount for you to buy your own products. You must purchase whatever you plan to sell. If you don't, why do you expect anyone else to?

2. Setup your mini-site.

Now, this is where most affiliates drop the ball. Affiliates promote their affiliate website but not there own. It takes seven visits for a prospective customer to turn into a paying customer. So what happens when they don't buy from you the first time? How will you follow-up? They'll visit someone else who probably will follow-up and get their business. You should be promoting your own email list. Highlight the benefits to your visitors of joining, then, set up a series of pitches, articles, etc. with your auto responder. The best formula to use is to promote for at least two whole weeks every other day before you introduce another product. Now all you need to do is set your website up. 3. Build Your List.

Content Really Is King

It is every affiliate's wish to have unique site content absent of any re-write or editing restrictions, effectively content with an "open license." Many sources do exist for content that can't be changed, but there are very few sources which allow an affiliate to manipulate the article and make it unique and specific to their site(s). However, this trend could be changing in the near future.

There is a war between content sites and sites which purely provide product lists. Google, for the moment, has clearly indicated that sites providing unique content will prove victorious in the battle. This means affiliates who want to compete on Google need to have unique content for their sites or risk vanishing into that ever increasing special black hole Google seems to reserve for affiliates.

So where does an affiliate get unique content from? Some affiliates can write their own, but it's generally a minority that has the time or desire to do so. A few pay for content to be produced by freelance writers on networks such as Elance (www.elance.com) or by professional copy writing services such as InfoSearch Media (www.infosearchmedia.com).

Others are lucky enough to get content from their merchants. That is until the merchants realize that distributing their own content is only a short term gain for long term oblivion. The content's value is diluted and degraded due to being repeated and copied to a point where the merchant loses control of it. Affiliates absent of the gratuitous merchant turn to sites such as Ezine Articles (www.ezinearticles.com) and ARA Content (www.aracontent.com) where the content is free, but can't be edited or changed. In most cases, content provided from these sources must also retain links and/or credits to the author as well as the source site.

The obvious solution is to have merchants develop content specific to their affiliates, no credits required, no back links requested (well other than affiliate tracked and tagged ones that is), the right to edit, cut, slice, dice and the expressed permission to generally edit the content to make it unique.

The niche of "open license" content has but a few players in the arena. For example, Wikiepedia (www.wikipedia.org) while not a merchant, does allow articles to be re-written; however, this permission does come with a few strings attached as they apply a fair number of requirements in order to use the content. Various Affiliate Management firms now provide in "open license" house content development for their affiliates. These services should place them as leading contenders in the affiliate content arena. At the end of the day though, each individual affiliate still needs to sit down and work out how to make the content unique to them if they want to win their battle with Google.

Any business of your own can, at times, be a lonely place. You don't always have perspective, never mind all the answers. Just as offline business owners do, affiliates need to have sounding boards for ideas, problems, questions and just plain encouragement.

Who can you go to, besides to your friends, spouse, or colleagues from a prior business who alternate between being jealous of your freedom and incredulous at the risks they think you are taking? Venture out and spend some time with people who can broaden your perspective: Go to affiliate conferences where you can make contacts who understand your business model, but don't compete in your space. Attend local and regional business meetings in your area of technical specialty, in the subject of your niche site, or in a totally unrelated industry to see how they approach things.

Strike up a business friendship with merchants with whom you do business. Affiliate network contacts are great sources of information, but they're very busy so don't expect to chatask specific questions, or better yet, offer information that's constructive.

See what's new at conferences of businesses in your industry. Don't be shy about striking up conversations with speakers and other attendees. Read offline ecommerce magazines to keep up with the news and identify people you'd like to partner with in the future.

Also, without naming names, some affiliate networks have been known for not tracking sales and leads properly as honestly as they could be (which means money from your pocket). Payment thresholds can often be fairly high - a $50 US minimum is common for international publishers. Finally, a payment delay of two months or more from the date of a sale/lead generation can occur, as the third-party affiliate network waits until the advertiser pays them, before they pay you (the publisher).

Conclusion
In many (if not most cases), having both options of partnering directly with an advertiser or through an affiliate network is not a choice - it's usually one or the other. If an advertiser you like only offers their affiliate program through a third party, you're limited to the advertiser network they've partnered with, or not partnering at all.
